-

Translation

And since it dies -

it contracts, and he is not aware of it

[And when it dies, it contracts, and he does not pay attention] that it has become distanced three handbreadths from the roofing, since it is not discernible.

And we raise a difficulty:

And did Abaye say

that

Rabbi Meir is concerned about death

and therefore said that one does not make an animal a wall for a sukka,

whereas Rabbi Judah is not concerned

and therefore validates an animal as a wall for a sukka?!

But we learned: An Israelite woman who married a priest

and is permitted to eat teruma as long as her husband is alive,

and her husband went to a country overseas,

she

eats teruma on the presumption that he is alive.

And we juxtapose against it

that that Mishna contradicts a beraita which teaches:

“This is your bill of divorce one hour before my death”,

she

is forbidden to eat teruma immediately,

because perhaps he will die, and this is the hour before his death, and it follows that the divorce takes effect from now.

This proves that we are concerned about death!

And Abaye said

to resolve it:

It is not difficult! This is Rabbi Meir, who is not concerned about death; that is Rabbi Judah, who is concerned about death

[And as he explains below. And since this is so, there is a difficulty: for in our discussion Abaye said the opposite concerning the views of Rabbi Meir and Rabbi Judah?!] -

For it was taught in a beraita: One who purchases wine from among the Kutim

[who are not concerned to separate teruma and tithes when they sell to others, for they are suspect regarding “and before the blind you shall not place a stumbling block” [Tosafot], as, for example, when the night of Shabbat has arrived, or he has no utensils with which to separate terumot and tithes] -

This one

says: The two log that I am going to separate

after I begin to drink,

they

are from now

teruma

gedola -

Ten

log that I will separate later are from now

first tithe ,

and

nine

log will be from now

second tithe.

And he begins

[he consecrates] the second tithe that he designated, upon money that he has in his house , since this matter can be rectified immediately.

And he drinks immediately

and leaves enough for the teruma and the first tithe—for which he designated them by name—which he does not drink, and later he will separate the teruma and the tithe, and we say: It has been retroactively clarified that these log had initially been set aside to be separated, and it is upon them that the teruma took effect,

the words of Rabbi Meir.
