-
Translation
He said to them
Rava:
Did I not say to you, “Do not attribute it to him,”
by Rav Nahman")
empty vessels,
empty jars. That is, things that are not correct.
This is what Rav Nahman said: The place of adhesion -
even if it was entirely removed, it is fit. And this is when enough remains in it for grasping,
a handhold.
And how much
is it?
Abaye said: the amount of a batda,
a finger.
And this measure is even
in an ox,
a large ox.
We learned in the Mishna:
the inner rumen:
Rav Yehuda said in the name of Rav: Natan bar Sheila, the chief of the slaughterers of Tzippori, testified before Rabbi in the name of Rabbi Natan: Which is the inner rumen? -
The sanya de-vei.
For it is the blind intestine, and it is a repulsive place.
And likewise Rabbi Yehoshua ben Korkha said,
that the inner rumen is
the sanya de-vei.
Rabbi Yishmael said:
the inner rumen is
the istumka de-karsa,
the mouth of the stomach.
Rav Asi said in the name of Rabbi Yohanan: There is a narrow place in the rumen,
and that place is called the inner rumen -
and I do not know which it is.
Rav Nahman bar Yitzhak said: The rumen has fallen into the well.
Since you do not know what it is, you have benefited us nothing by explaining it.
Rav Aha bar Rav Avya said in the name of Rav Asi:
I shall explain what that “narrow place” is
” - from the narrow part,
from the place where the rumen gradually becomes narrow toward the esophagus. And it is called “inner rumen” because it is concealed between the walls of the chest,
and below.
That is, this place is below the outer rumen when the animal is suspended by its legs after slaughter, with its head directed downward.
Rabbi Yaakov bar Nahmani said in the name of Shmuel: A place in which there is no milt.
“Milt” is wool. That is, inside the rumen there are tiny projections that appear like wool, and they customarily scrape them away from the rumen with boiling water. And there is a place at the edge of the rumen, near the esophagus, which is smooth and has no wool [“milt”], and that is the place of the inner rumen.
“Milat” means wool. That is, inside the rumen there are tiny projections that look like wool, and it is customary to scrape them off the rumen with boiling water. There is a place at the end of the rumen, near the esophagus, that is smooth and has no wool—“milat”—and that is the place of the inner rumen.
Rabbi Avina said that Geniva said in the name of Rav: A handbreadth in the esophagus
the
adjacent to the rumen -
this is the inner rumen.
They say in the West in the name of Rabbi Yosei bar Hanina: The entire rumen -
this is the inner rumen.
And what is the outer rumen? -
Flesh
a thick membrane
that covers most of the rumen.
Rabba bar Rav Huna said: Its exposed part.
And we explain:
What is “its exposed part”? [
see a drawing in the book Sihat Hulin ]
Rav Avya said: The place where the slaughterers open it.
The place where the slaughterers begin cutting the animal’s abdomen after slaughter, and the beginning of the rumen is visible there.
In Nehardea they act in accordance with Rabba bar Rav Huna.
Rav Ashi said to Ameimar: All these statements,
concerning the sanya de-vei, the istumka, and the place in which there is no milt -
what [is their status]?
He said to him: All of them -
belong to the teaching of Rabba bar Rav Huna!
For all of them stand on the same side, above or below, and when that side is deemed non-kosher through any puncture, all the punctures in these places are likewise deemed non-kosher.
And as for Rav Asi, who said in the name of Rabbi Yohanan
who said, “and I do not know which it is
” - what [is its status]?
He said to him: Rav Aha bar Avya already explained it,
namely, from the narrow part and below. And it too corresponds to its exposed part.
And as for Rabbi Avina,
who said that the inner rumen is in the esophagus,
and as for the people of the West,
who say that the entire rumen is called inner, and its law is that any puncture renders it non-kosher -
what [is their status]?
He said to him: These certainly disagree
with Rabba bar Rav Huna.
We learned in the Mishna:
Rabbi Yehuda says: In a large one
a handbreadth, and the small one by most of it.
Etc.:
Rabbi Binyamin bar Yefet said in the name of Rabbi Elazar: Not “large” literally large,
that is, not the largest of the large.
And not “small” literally small,
that is, the smallest of the small.
Rather, any one in which a handbreadth was torn, but it was not most of it -
this is what we learned: In a large one, a handbreadth.
And any one in which
most of it was torn, but it was not a handbreadth -
this is what we learned: In a small one, by most of it.
And the Gemara wonders: Where
most of it was torn, but it was not a handbreadth,
is it not
obvious
that it is non-kosher, since most is considered as all of it!?
And we answer:
It is necessary only [to teach this] where it becomes a handbreadth with something [additional].
That is, if something is torn in addition to the majority, that tear will be a handbreadth.
Lest you say,
in such a case, where only something is lacking to complete a handbreadth, it is not enough that most of it was torn, but
until a handbreadth is torn in it, it is not non-kosher -
it teaches us
that even so, if most of it was torn, that suffices to render it non-kosher.
Geniva said in the name of Rabbi Asi: If the outer rumen was perforated,
the outer rumen, whose measure is a handbreadth, and a long opening like a skylight was made in it, whose width is
the size of a sela, it is non-kosher. For if you stretch it
and bring the one edge of the skylight opposite the other -
it will amount to a handbreadth.
And accordingly, the measure of a sela is two-thirds of a handbreadth, and the circumference of the skylight is two handbreadths, and it follows that the diameter of the skylight is a handbreadth, according to the rule that the circumference of every circle is three times [and somewhat more than] its diameter.
Rabbi Hiyya bar Abba said: To me it was explained by Geniva, at the ferry of Nehardea:
If it was perforated
the size of a sela -
it is fit. More than the size of a sela -
it is non-kosher!
And how much
is
“more than the size of a sela”?
Rav Yosef said: For example, where they can insert
through this skylight
three date pits,
date seeds, when they are
with the refuse,
with the remnants of the food, and they enter
with difficulty.
Or if those three pits were
without the refuse
and then they enter
with ease.
We learned in the Mishna: The omasum and the reticulum
that were punctured outward.
The Sages taught: A needle that is found in the thickness of the reticulum,
if the reticulum was punctured
on one side -
it is fit. On two sides -
it is non-kosher.
If a clot of blood was found on it -
