Translation
and the murderer himself,
that he must be killed and not transgress
from where do we know this?
It is a logical consideration.
As in the case
of that man who came before
Rava.
He said,
he asked
him,
Rava:
“The master of my village said to me,
the ruler of the village:
‘Kill so-and-so,
kill a certain man,
and if not
you kill him—
I will kill
kill
you
—is it permitted for me to kill him in order to save my life?”
He said to him: “Let him kill you
he will kill you
and do not kill
him! For
what did you see
what have you seen
that your blood
that your blood
is redder
, more red than your fellow’s, and therefore your blood should be preferred for saving over his blood?!
Perhaps the blood of that man—
is redder!”
And this is because, since the permission to transgress a prohibition in order to save a life is learned from the words of the verse, “These are the commandments that a person shall perform and live through them,” and we expound: “and not die through them,” the reason for the permission is that the life of a person of Israel is more precious in the eyes of the Omnipresent than the commandments; but when in any event a person of Israel will be killed, there is no permission to transgress and kill, for why should your blood be more precious to the Omnipresent than your fellow’s blood?
That pregnant woman,
a pregnant woman,
who smelled food,
who smelled the scent of food on the Day of Atonement.
They came before Rabbi
to ask whether it was permitted to feed her.
He said to them: “Go,
go, and
whisper to her that it is the Day of Atonement.”
Whisper to her, and she was quietened,
she accepted the whisper, and she did not need to eat, because the fetus’s desire to receive food from its mother’s womb ceased.
He recited concerning him
Rabbi recited concerning that fetus the verse [in Jeremiah 1
“Before I formed you in the womb,
I knew you.”
There emerged from him
he emerged and was born
Rabbi Yohanan.
That pregnant woman who smelled food; they came before Rabbi Hanina.
He said to them: “Whisper to her, and she was not quietened.”
