Translation
And we said:
And if not,
that she has no cup of ikarim, or that it was ineffective.
Let him bring three
kafizi
a vessel measuring three log filled
with Persian shomkhei
Persian onions [which are large],
and let him boil them in wine and give it to her to drink
the woman suffering from ziva.
And let him say to her: Arise from your ziva!
Cease from your ziva. [This is a segula-related matter, and so is everything stated below].
And if not, let him seat her
at a crossroads,
and let her take hold of
hold
a cup of wine in her hand, and let
let
a person come from behind
without her noticing,
and frighten her
and she will be frightened by him,
and let him say to her: Arise from your ziva!
And if not, let him bring a fistful of cumin
let him take a fistful of cumin
and a fistful of turmeric
saffron
and a fistful of fenugreek
fenugreek
and let him boil them in wine and give it to her to drink, and let him say to her: Arise from your ziva!
And if not, let him bring sixty covers of barrels
let him take sixty covers of barrels
and rub her with them
he should rub the woman suffering from ziva with them after soaking the covers in water
and let him say to her: Arise from your ziva!
And if not, let him bring pashtina
a grass that does not grow tall but spreads over the ground
and let him boil it in wine, and rub her with it
he should rub her with it
and let him say to her: Arise from your ziva!
And if not, let him bring harnuga de-higita
a type of grass that grows beside thorns called
romita, and let him burn it
he should burn the grass,
and in summer let him place it in worn linen garments
if it is summer, he should collect the ashes into worn linen garments
and in winter in worn cotton-wool garments
in winter he should collect them into worn cotton wool.
And if not, let him dig seven pits
he should dig seven pits,
and let him burn in them branches of a young vine that is orla
he should burn in them twigs of a new vineyard that is still orla,
and let her take a cup of wine in her hand,
and seat her over one of the pits
and let him raise her from this one and seat her on that one, and raise her from this one and seat her on that one
he should raise her from this pit and seat her on the second, and so on with all of them
and with each one
at every standing
let him say to her: Arise from your ziva!
And if not, let him bring fine flour
flour of fine meal
and let him smear her from halfway down
they should smear her with it from half her body and below
and let him say to her: Arise from your ziva!
And if not, let him bring an ostrich egg
the egg of an ostrich,
and let him burn it, and place it in worn linen garments in summer and in worn cotton-wool garments in winter.
And if not, let him open a barrel of wine for her for her sake
that is, she should always drink much wine.
And if not, let him take
let him hold in her hand
a barley grain found in the dung of a white mule
a barley grain found in the dung of a white mule.
If she takes it
in her hand
for one day, it ceases
from her ziva
for two days; and if she takes it for two days, it ceases for three days; and if she takes it for three days, it ceases forever [Some versions read “one thread,” that is, that she held one grain, and likewise throughout].
некоторые читают: «одну нить», то есть если она держала одно зерно, и так во всех случаях].
Above we said
for yarkonta, two in beer, and it is uprooted.
And if not, let him bring the head of a shibuta
the head of a fish whose name is shibuta
salted
when it is salted
and let him boil it in beer and let him drink.
And if not, let him bring locust brine
brine of locusts
and if there is no locust brine, let him bring brine of nakirei
brine of a type of small birds
and let him bring it into the bathhouse
he should bring it into the bathhouse
and rub him with it
he should rub him with the brine.
And if there is no bathhouse, let him stand him between the oven and the wall
between the oven and the wall, which is a warm place, and he will perspire and the illness will leave.
Rabbi Yohanan said: One who wishes to warm him
the person suffering from yarkonta and heal him
should wipe him with his sheet
he should wrap him well in his sheet, which is warm, or in the sheet of another person suffering from yarkonta.
Rav Aha bar Yosef was afflicted by it
he became ill with yarkonta
Rav Kahana performed for him
this remedy of the sheet
and he was healed
he was cured.
And if not, let him bring three kafizi
three log
of Persian dates, and three kafizi of wax that drips from a beehive that has overflowed
wax dripping from a hive that has overflowed,
and three kafizi of ahala
a substance used for cleansing
red tole'ana
red, and let him boil them in beer and let him drink.
And if not, let him bring a young ass, the son of a male donkey
a foal, the son of she-asses,
and let him shave
the sick man
the middle of his head
the middle of his head,
and let him let blood from its forehead
he should let blood from the foal from its forehead,
and place it on his head
he should pour the blood onto his head, in the shaved place,
and let him beware of its eyes, lest he blind them
so that the blood should not enter its eyes and it become blind.
And if not, let him bring the head of a ram
the head of a ram
that is lying in pickling brine
that is pickled in vinegar or brine
and let him boil it in beer and let him drink.
And if not, let him bring a spotted wild boar
a boar spotted with patches
and let him tear it open and place it on his belly
he should place it upon him.
And if not, let him bring leeks from the middle of the garden bed
that which grows in the middle of the garden bed and is pungent.
A certain Arab
an Arab
who was afflicted by it
he became ill with yarkonta
said to the gardener
the owner of the garden:
Take my cloak
take my cloak
and give me a garden bed of leeks
a garden bed of leeks in exchange for it.
He gave it to him, and he ate it. He said to him
the Arab: Lend me
your cloak, and I will sleep in it a little
lend me the cloak, and I will sleep in it a little
I will wrap myself in it and
wrap himself and sleep in it.
When he became warm and rose
when he became warm and perspired
little by little it fell from him
pieces fell from the cloak little by little, because of the heat that came out of the sick man when he was cured of the illness.
And concerning that which we said
for yarkonta, two in beer, and it is uprooted.
we examined it:
But is it permitted
for a person to cause himself castration?
But it was taught in a beraita: From where is it derived that castration in a person is forbidden?
The verse states
in the passage concerning defects in offerings
“And crushed, and beaten, and torn, and cut off”
[all of which are defects in the reproductive organs] “You shall not offer to the Lord”
“And in your land you shall not do”
and we read: “You shall not be done,” meaning
you shall not do it to yourselves
castration,
the words of Rabbi Hanina.
And we answer:
These words apply where he intends
that he castrates the organ itself, but
here it happens by itself
for he does not touch the organ, but drinks a cup of ikarim and becomes castrated [according to the Rashba and the Ritva].
For Rabbi Yohanan said: One who wishes to castrate a rooster should remove its crest, and it becomes castrated by itself
thus, although it is forbidden to castrate living creatures, nevertheless, since he did not castrate it through the organ itself, it is permitted.
And we object: But Rav Ashi said: The rooster does not become castrated through this, rather
it is haughtiness
that has seized it
that it mourns over the removal of its splendor and does not mate. But to castrate it ממש is forbidden even without [doing so through] the organ?
And we answer:
Rather,
that which it is permitted to drink a cup of ikarim is
in the case of a eunuch
one who had already been a eunuch beforehand.
