Pesachim 121b — the Talmud in English

Rabbi Shemai happened to come to a redemption of the firstborn.

They asked him:

this

is obvious

to us, that

for the redemption of the firstborn

we bless

“Who sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us concerning

the redemption of the firstborn,” the father of the son blesses

this blessing, and not the cohen with whom he is redeemed, for the mitzva rests upon the father and not upon the cohen.

Rather, this is what we are uncertain about:

“Blessed are You Who has given us life, sustained us, and brought us to this time,”

which we bless at the redemption of the firstborn—who blesses it? Does the

cohen bless, or does the father of the son bless?

And the sides of the inquiry are:

Does the

cohen bless

because

benefit comes into his possession,

for he benefits from receiving the five selaim?

Or does the father of the son bless

because

he performs a mitzva?

He did not have an answer.

Rabbi Shemai did not know what to answer.

He came and asked in the beit-midrash.

They said to him: The father of the son blesses two!

That is, also the blessing of Sheheheyanu.

And the halakha is: The father of the son blesses two!
