Original text — Nedarim 58a

Translation

Anything that has a remedy, such as untithed produce

which is rendered permitted through the separation of terumot and tithes,

and second tithe and consecrated property

which are rendered permitted through redemption,

and new produce

which is rendered permitted through the omer—

All these

the Sages did not assign a measure for them

of prohibition in relation to the mixture into which the prohibition became mixed; rather, any amount of the prohibition that became mixed with its own kind prohibits the entire mixture.

And any item that has no remedy, such as: teruma, terumat maaser, and hallah,

and orla and mixed species of the vineyard, the Sages assigned to them

with regard to the prohibitions, and even when they became mixed with their own kind,

a measure,

such that only when the prohibition contains the measure that the Sages established in relation to the mixture is the entire mixture prohibited.

They said to him

the Rabbis to Rabbi Shimon:

But the produce of the Sabbatical year

which is something that

has no remedy, and the Sages did not assign it a measure,

but it prohibits in any amount

; for we learned:

The produce of the Sabbatical year prohibits

in

any amount

when it became mixed

with its own kind,

whether produce of the Sabbatical year became mixed with permitted produce, in which case the entire mixture is prohibited, or whether one again planted in the Sabbatical year produce of the sixth year, in which case the prohibited growths prohibit all the produce even when the growths contain only any amount

!?

Rabbi Shimon said to them

also

they—the Sages—did not say that the produce of the Sabbatical year prohibits in any amount

except with regard to removal,

to require that the entire mixture be eaten before the time of removal, because since it is possible to eat it before the time of removal, it is “something that has a remedy.”

But

if they became mixed after the time of removal, and

with

regard to

eating,

the Sages assigned them a measure: that the prohibition should be

in a measure that imparts flavor

throughout the entire mixture, whether the prohibition became mixed with its own kind or became mixed with a non-kind.

It is therefore demonstrated that the growths do not follow after the principal item to be permitted like it; for if not, the growths themselves would also be permitted, and how could the growths prohibit even the principal item

!?

Perhaps this [

growths of prohibited Sabbatical-year produce]

too,

since

with regard to stringency

we say that they are prohibited and do not follow the status of the principal plant—

is different.

Rather, from this it is resolved

[from here the doubt of Yishmael, the man of Kefar Yama, can be resolved]:

For we learned: Onions

of the sixth year,

upon which rains fell

in the Sabbatical year,

and they sprouted—

If their leaves were black

[inclining toward blackness], they are

prohibited,

for the blackness of the leaves demonstrates that their growth is good and that they grew from Sabbatical-year soil.

And if they

turned green,

the leaves, they are

permitted,

for this demonstrates that they did not grow from Sabbatical-year soil, but from the onions themselves.

Rabbi Hanania ben Antigonus says:

If they can be

the onions

pulled up by their leaves,

they are

prohibited,

for this demonstrates that their nourishment is strong and that they grew from Sabbatical-year soil.

And corresponding to them, for after the Sabbatical year

they are

permitted.

That is to say: onions of the Sabbatical year upon which rains fell and which sprouted in the eighth year—if the leaves blackened, or if the onions can be pulled up by their leaves, then the leaves are permitted, because the growths are not from the onions but from the soil of the eighth year; and in those leaves the growths certainly became greater than the principal part of the onion mixed into them, and they nullify it.

Does it emerge

it is therefore demonstrated

that permitted growths raise the prohibition,

and we do not say: On the contrary, let the growths follow after the principal item and be prohibited like it.

And we reject:

But perhaps

the Mishna is discussing

with

onions

that were crushed

[that one pounded and ground the onions], which are inferior and do not cause the growths to become like them.

Rather, from this

resolve the doubt of Yishmael, the man of Kefar Yama

; for it was taught:
