Nedarim 40b (מ:) — the Talmud in English

As Samuel said: Flowing water does not purify,

because we are concerned that the rainwater has become greater than the flowing water—

but

in the

Euphrates River only during the days of Tishrei,

because that is neither the season of rainfall nor the time of snowmelt, and at that time we are not concerned that the rainwater has become excessive .

Samuel’s father made ritual baths for his daughters during the days of Nisan,

because he was then concerned about snowmelt, and therefore he did not allow them to immerse in flowing water during the month of Nisan.

And mats

mats were placed beneath their feet in the river, so that the mud on the riverbed would not interpose between their feet and the water]

during the days of Tishrei,

when he then allowed them to immerse in the river, because there was no concern about rainwater [and during the other autumn and winter months they immersed in the ritual baths in their homes because of the cold].

Rav Ami said in the name of Rav: What is the meaning of that which is written

that the Holy One, blessed be He, said to Ezekiel:

“And you, son of man, prepare for yourself the equipment of an exile”?
