Translation
What is this?
The addition that the second one added
what need have I of it!?
Behold,
now it can be said: he stated the more stringent one,
the one who accepted, namely, “three, four, five,” accepted upon himself
the lenient one,
one, two,
all the more so
that he accepted it!? And it follows that the second one does not contradict the first one, but rather adds to his words.
They say in the West:
in the case of two witnesses, one of whom counts one, two, and the other three, four, five,
there is no contradiction in one who counts.
We have returned to you, “The one who said.”
Mishna:
One who said "
I am a nazirite"—
and his fellow heard
the first one,
and said: "
And I,"
and another fellow further said: "
And I" —
Behold,
all of them are nazirites.
And if
the first one was released,
who asked concerning his naziriteship and a Sage released him,
they are all released,
since they made their vows dependent upon his vow.
But if
the last one was released,
behold
the last one
alone
is permitted, and
the others
are all forbidden
until they themselves release their vows.
One who
said "
I am a nazirite"—
and his fellow heard and said: "
My mouth is like his mouth," "
and my hair is like his hair" [that is,
he said: "My hair is like his hair"],
behold he is
the second one too
a nazirite,
and the Gemara explains this more fully.
One who said "
I am a nazirite"—
and his wife heard and said "
And I,"
behold he
annuls hers, and
if
his remains in force.
And if she said "
I am a nazirite,"
and her husband heard and said "
And I,"
again he
cannot annul,
and this passage will be explained in the Gemara.
One who said in the presence of his wife: "
I am a nazirite,"
and added and asked his wife: "
And you?"
Do you wish to vow naziriteship like me—
and
she answered and
said,
the woman: "
Amen,"
and she became a nazirite —
Behold, the husband—if he wishes—
annuls hers, and his remains
in force.
And if she said in the presence of her husband: "
I am a nazirite,"
and added to ask him: "
And you?"
and
the husband
said: "
Amen"—
again he
cannot annul even her naziriteship.
Gemara:
We learned in the Mishna: One who said, "I am a nazirite," and his fellow heard and said, "And I, and I"—they are all nazirites:
Reish Lakish sat before Rabbi Judah Nesi'a,
and sat
Reish Lakish
and said:
This that we learned in our Mishna, that they are all nazirites:
and that is when they all attached themselves
all those who said "And I"
within the time of speech
to the first one.
And how much
is the measure of "
within the time of speech"?
The time required to greet.
And how much is the time required to greet?
The time required for a student to greet his teacher,
namely, "Peace be upon you, my teacher," that is, the measure of saying three words; it follows that only three people can attach themselves to the naziriteship of the first, because three repetitions of "And I" constitute the time of speech.
He said to him,
Rabbi Judah Nesi'a to Reish Lakish:
According to your words, that you say: A person cannot attach himself to another's naziriteship except "within the time of speech," which is the time required for a student to greet his teacher,
you have left no interval for the student [that is, you have left no sufficient time for the student] who wished to attach himself. If his teacher passes there and he must say to him, "Peace be upon you, my teacher," he will no longer be able to attach himself, since the "time of speech" has already passed.
