Translation
It still remains to inquire: if
the first one said
the first one: “
I am a nazirite when so-and-so has a
who is not before us
son,”
and his fellow heard and said: “
And I” \-
And I” \-
what is the law?
Do we say:
since he vowed nazirite status
not in his presence
of the one destined to be a father, he is no longer embarrassed to refer to the birth of his own son, and
he said it with regard to himself,
that he will be a nazirite when he himself has a son?
Or perhaps
even when he says this not in the presence of the father of the son:
this is what the second one said to the first one
the second to the first:
I love
him as you do [I love that so-and-so as you love him],
I love that so-and-so as you love him, and I too hope for a son to be born to that so-and-so, and I vow nazirite status if indeed that so-and-so merits a son.
And we conclude:
it remains an unresolved question,
that is: this question is not resolved.
Mishna:
One who says: A.
I am a nazirite, B.
b.
and
I shall be
a nazirite
also
when I have a son.
And
he began counting his own [the one he accepted upon himself without connection to a son],
naziriteship—the one he accepted without connection to having a son—and
and afterward a son was born to him,
he
completes
first
the
nazirite status
of his own,
since he accepted it first, and he brings all the offerings and shaves.
And afterward he counts
the second nazirite status
of his son.
And if he said: A.
I am a nazirite
when
I have a son B.
b.
and a nazirite
now—
he began counting his own, and afterward—
before he completed the count of his nazirite status—
a son was born to him,
he
sets aside
the nazirite status
of his own
in the middle,
and counts that of his son,
because since he accepted it before his own, he must count it immediately when the son is born,
and afterward completes his own.
Gemara:
Rava inquired:
A. If
a person said
a person: “
I am a nazirite [ordinary nazirite status, which is thirty days]
—an unspecified naziriteship, which is thirty days—
after twenty days, and from now one hundred days,”
what is the law
that the observance of the one-hundred-day nazirite status begins now, and he interrupts it after twenty days because of the second nazirite status that he accepted first, or that the one-hundred-day nazirite status takes effect only after the observance of the second nazirite status? Shall we say:
Since these one hundred days are not completed within these twenty days [since the one-hundred-day nazirite status does not end in these twenty days preceding the beginning of the second nazirite status],
and it turns out that he would then have to interrupt his nazirite status and observe the second nazirite status that he explicitly accepted after twenty days, if so, one may say—
that
the one-hundred-day nazirite status does not take effect
from now, for presumably this person does not intend to interrupt his nazirite status and return to complete it after he observes the second nazirite status, and his intention is that the first twenty days should be free of nazirite status.
Or perhaps:
Since he has
a measure of
hair growth [that is: the measure of the lesser of the nazirite statuses, and more]
—that is, enough for the shorter of the naziriteships, and more—
at the end
after observing the ordinary nazirite status, for he accepted one hundred days, and eighty days will remain for him to complete —
And therefore
the one-hundred-day nazirite status takes effect
the one-hundred-day nazirite status from now, and he will interrupt it after twenty days and observe the second nazirite status, and after he completes it he will return and complete the one-hundred-day nazirite status.
And the Gemara wondered about Rava:
While Rava is uncertain concerning a one-hundred-day nazirite status, for which thirty days remain to be completed after the second nazirite status—
let him be uncertain
to Rava in a case where he initially accepted upon himself
a short nazirite status
that is, ordinary nazirite status of thirty days, and an additional second nazirite status after twenty days, for although thirty days of nazirite status do not remain when he returns to complete the first, nevertheless it is possible to consider that perhaps he intended to interrupt it with the second nazirite status.
And we answer:
he is asking one question by way of another,
that is: indeed, Rava is also uncertain concerning a short nazirite status, and Rava’s question concerning an extended nazirite status is in the manner of “if you find it said,” based on the simple form of the question concerning a short nazirite status—
