Translation

And the members of the synagogue enter the synagogue ![](pamud.bmp "

")

and read

from a Torah scroll

seven

called-up men, but they do not pray with the congregation; rather, each one prays individually,

and they leave .

Rabbi Joshua ben Karha says: They did not need to go and stroll in the marketplace; rather, they sit and are silent,

and remain silent.

And they do not recite a halakhic teaching or an aggadic teaching in the house of

the mourner .

It was said about him, Rabbi Ḥananya ben Gamliel, that he would recite a halakhic teaching and aggada in the mourner’s house .

They said about him, about Rabbi Hanania ben Gamliel, that he would recite a halakhic teaching and an aggadic teaching in the house of the mourner .

The Sages taught: A mourner, the first Shabbat,

the first week—

does not leave the entrance of his house .

The second—

The second—

he leaves

his house

but does not sit in his place

that is fixed, rather, he changes the place where he sits.

The third—

he sits in his place and does not speak .

The fourth—

he is like any other person .

Rabbi Judah says: They did not need to say, “The first Shabbat he does not leave the entrance of his house”,

for it is certain that he does not leave the entrance of his house—

for everyone enters

then

his house to comfort him .

Rather,

this is what they said:

The second—

he does not leave the entrance of his house.

The third—

he leaves but does not sit in his place.

The fourth—

he sits in his place and does not speak.

The fifth—

he is like any other person.

The Sages taught: For the entire thirty days

of mourning they are forbidden

to marry .

And if his wife died—

it is forbidden

to him

to marry another woman until three Festivals have passed over him .

Rabbi Judah says:

As long as only

the first and second Festivals

after the death of his wife have passed over him,

it is forbidden

to him to marry another woman.

And even though the

third

Festival has not passed over him—

he is permitted

to marry a woman. And if he has no children—

An incident occurred: The wife of Yosef Ha-Kohen died. And he said to her sister, while they were still in the cemetery: “Go and provide for your sister’s children!” That is, he betrothed her and married her immediately . Nevertheless, he did not have relations with her until a long time afterward. The Gemara explains: What is meant by “a long time afterward”? Rav Pappa said: After thirty days . The Sages taught: For all thirty days of mourning, they are prohibited to wear pressed garments. The prohibition against wearing ironed garments . Both garments clothing that is new, and both garments clothing that is old, which emerge now from the press, since they are like new ones .

he is permitted to marry

a woman

immediately, because of the neglect of procreation .

And likewise if

she left him young children—

he is permitted to marry immediately, because of their sustenance,

so that she will care for them.

An incident: the wife of Joseph the Priest died.

And he said to her sister

while they were still

in the cemetery: “Go and provide for the children of your sister!”

That is, he betrothed her and married her immediately.

And nevertheless, he did not have intercourse with her except after a long time.

And the Gemara explains:

What is “after a long time”?

Rav Pappa said: After thirty days .

The Sages taught: For the entire thirty days

of mourning they are forbidden

to wear pressed garments.

The prohibition against wearing pressed garments.

Both garments

clothing

new, and both garments

clothing

old

that

come out

now

from the press, since they are like new.

Rabbi says: They prohibited only

wearing

new garments

that are pressed

only .

Rabbi Elazar son of Rabbi Shimon says: They prohibited only

wearing

new white garments only.

Abaye went out in an old woolen garment,

an old pressed white garment, which was not new, because he held

like Rabbi,

that they prohibited only new garments, and did not prohibit old pressed white garments.

Rava went out in a

tunic

Roman

Roman

red

red

new,

in a new red garment [which had not been white], because he held

like Rabbi Elazar son of Rabbi Shimon,

that they prohibited only pressed white garments.

We learned in the Mishna:

For they said: Shabbat counts and does not interrupt.

And they disagreed concerning the conduct of mourning on Shabbat,

the Judeans and the Galileans.
