Translation
They brought
him
to his son,
to the son of the one who had fallen,
and slaughtered it before him!
by deceiving the eyes,
holding his eyes as though he had slaughtered the son, but in fact he had not slaughtered him,
he fainted and sighed,
the father from his distress over the slaughter of his son.
his intestines returned to their place,
his intestines returned to their place as a result of the fright.
and he stitched them,
and connected them
to his stomach.
We learned in the Mishna:
its legs were broken.
A certain basket
a basket
of birds,
whose legs had been broken at the knee-joint below it, or above the knee-joint, and the bone did not protrude outward,
which came before Rava.
Rava examined it at the juncture of the tendons,
that all sixteen cords should remain intact —
and he declared it fit.
Rav Yehuda said in the name of Rav: A dislocated arm,
whose shoulder had been dislocated,
in an animal —
it is fit.
A dislocated thigh,
that is, the hip-bone that slipped from its place and its ligaments were destroyed —
in a bird, it is tereifa.
A dislocated wing,
in a bird —
it is tereifa
see a drawing in the book Sihat Hulin], for
we are concerned lest,
when the wing was dislocated,
the lung was punctured.
And Shmuel said: it must be examined,
the lung by blowing into it.
And Rabbi Yohanan likewise said —
it must be examined,
the lung.
Hezekiah said: A bird has no lung.
And as he proceeds to explain.
And Rabbi Yohanan said: It has,
a bird has a lung,
and it is found
in it
like a rose leaf,
which is thin and red, and it is found
between the wings.
And we raised an objection concerning this:
What is meant by
“A bird has no lung”
that Hezekiah said?
If you say that it does not have,
a bird has a lung
at all; but we see that it has
a lung!?
Rather,
Hezekiah's intention was to say
that it does not become tereifa through it,
when the lung is punctured.
And we object:
But Levi taught: The cases of terefot that the Sages enumerated with regard to an animal —
corresponding to them
there are
in a bird.
A bird has an additional one over them,
that it becomes tereifa if
the bone is broken
of the skull,
even though the membrane of the brain was not punctured.
And it is demonstrated from here that a bird becomes tereifa when the lung is punctured!?
And we answer:
Rather,
this is what Hezekiah said:
it does not have
a bird —
[a lung] for falling,
for if it fell, there is no need to examine its lung.
And not [a lung] for being burned,
for if it fell into a fire, we do not examine its lung.
What is the reason?
Rav Hana said: Since most of its ribs protect it.
And we object:
But since Rabbi Yohanan said that it has
a bird has a lung,
and it is like a rose leaf between the wings, it follows that Hezekiah holds that it does not have
a lung at all.
Rather, they said in the West in the name of Rabbi Yosei son of Rabbi Hanina: From the words of the great one,
Hezekiah, who was the greatest of his generation,
it is apparent that he was not expert in birds.
Rav Huna said in the name of Rav: A dislocated thigh, in a bird —
it is fit. Rabba son of Rav Huna said to Rav Huna: But the Sages who came from Pumbedita said —
Rav Yehuda said in the name of Rav: A dislocated thigh, in a bird —
it is tereifa?!
He said to him,
Rav Huna:
My son, each river has its own course.
It is a proverb, like the spreading of the waters of a river, for one river is not like another: rather, there are places where the waters flow forcefully, and [places where they flow] slowly. So they conduct themselves differently in every place. And Rav held that it is fit, but he did not permit it for the people of Pumbedita because he saw that they practiced prohibition concerning it. And Rav Yehuda was from Pumbedita, and he held that Rav declared it tereifa.
Rabbi Abba went and found Rav Yirmeya bar Abba examining at the juncture of the tendons.
Rabbi Abba said to him,
Rabbi Abba:
Why does my master need all this?! But Rav Huna said in the name of Rav: A dislocated thigh in a bird is fit?! And
if, when the entire thigh is dislocated, it is fit, all the more so when only the juncture of the tendons has been cut, it is fit!?
Rav Yirmeya bar Abba said to him,
Rav Yirmeya bar Abba:
I know the Mishna.
For we learned at the beginning of the chapter:
An animal whose legs were cut —
from the knee-joint and below, it is fit. From the knee-joint and above, it is unfit. And similarly, when the juncture of the tendons is removed,
it is tereifa even though the knee-joint itself remains.
And Rav said concerning it —
and likewise with regard to a bird.
And Rabbi Abba challenged him:
If so,
according to you,
Rav's statement contradicts Rav's statement?!
Rav Yirmeya was silent,
Rav Yirmeya.
Rabbi Abba said to him,
Rabbi Abba:
Perhaps he distinguishes between a dislocated [thigh],
where the entire thigh was dislocated, which is fit,
and
between
a cut [thigh]
where only the juncture of the tendons was cut, which is tereifa!?
Rav Yirmeya said to him:
Rav Yirmeya: Is it that
you
are the one who
interprets
the
teaching of Rav?!
You are not the one who interprets his words; rather,
Rav explicitly said
himself as follows: a thigh
that is dislocated — it is fit; one that is cut —
it is unfit!
And do not wonder, for
we find that if
one cuts it here,
at the juncture of the tendons,
it dies.
But if
one cuts it here,
in the flesh of the leg above the juncture of the tendons,
it lives!
When
when
Rabbi Abba
went up to the Land of Israel from Babylonia,
he found
he encountered
Rabbi Zeira,
who had also gone up [before him] to the Land of Israel,
sitting and saying: Rav Huna said in the name of Rav: A dislocated thigh in a bird is tereifa.
Rabbi Abba said to him,
Rabbi Abba:
By the life of my master! From the day my master came up here,
