Translation
Rather,
if he was a descendant of both, and
either his maternal grandfather was from Joseph and his maternal grandmother was from Jethro, or his maternal grandfather was from Jethro and his maternal grandmother was from Joseph .
This is also precise, for it is written, “from the daughters of Putiel”—two. [Two “pituim,” one who babbled and one who fattened him] .
Conclude from it
according to our words, that he was a descendant of Jethro and Joseph.
Rava said: One who marries a woman must examine her brothers.
Since most sons resemble the mother’s brothers.
As it is stated: “And Aaron took Elisheva, daughter of Amminadav, sister of Nahshon.”
And we raised an objection concerning it,
Is it not self-evident, from the fact that it is stated “daughter of Amminadav,” that she is the sister of Nahshon?!
What is the purpose of stating “sister of Nahshon”?
From here: one who marries a woman must examine her brothers.
And since she was the sister of Nahshon, who was the prince of Judah, he therefore took her.
The tanna taught: Most sons resemble the mother’s brothers .
The Gemara returns to explain the episode of Jonathan son of Gershom, who was a priest for idolatry with Micah:
It is stated there,
“And they turned aside there and said to him: Who brought you here, and what are you doing in this place, and what do you have here?”
And it is difficult, for apparently they asked him three identical questions ?
And the Gemara explains: “Who brought you here?”
They said to him: Did you not come from Moses, concerning whom it is written, “Do not come near here”?! “
What are you doing in this place?”
Did you not come from Moses, concerning whom it is written, “What is this in your hand”?! “
What do you have here?”
Did you not come from Moses, concerning whom it is written, “And you, stand here with Me”—that you should become a priest for idolatry?!
He said to them: Thus have I received from the house of my father’s father: A person should always hire himself out for idolatry, and he should not require himself to depend upon creatures.
And he [
Jonathan son of Gershom]
thought
that it was permitted to hire himself out
for actual idolatry.
But it is not so! Rather, “idolatry”
means
work that is foreign to him.
That is not according to his honor. But there is no prohibition in it.
As Rav said to Rav Kahana: Leave a carcass in the marketplace and take wages, and do not say, “I am an important person, and the matter is degrading to me.” [
Simply carry a carcass in the marketplace, and take wages with which to support yourself. And do not say, “I am an important person, and it is not fitting for me to engage in these contemptible tasks”] .
When David saw
that money was exceedingly dear to him, he appointed him over the treasuries.
As it is stated: “And Shubael son of Gershom son of Manasseh
was officer over the treasuries.”
And was his name Shubael? But his name was Jonathan?
Rabbi Yohanan said: Because he returned to God with all his heart .
We learned in the Mishna:
“And the sons, the father
inherit and transmit inheritance.”
It follows that the son precedes the daughter in the inheritance of the father .
The Gemara explains:
From where
do we know that the son precedes the daughter in the inheritance of his father?
For it is written: “When a man dies
and has no son, then you shall transfer his inheritance to his daughter,”
and so forth.
And the Gemara infers from the wording of the verse:
The reason,
the reason that Scripture said that the daughter inherits is because
he has no son. If he has a son, the son precedes
the daughter.
Rav Pappa said to Abaye: Say
[Perhaps the intention of the verse is to say],
if there is a son, let the son inherit,
[let him inherit]
if there is a daughter, let the daughter inherit.
If there are a son and a daughter, neither this one inherits nor that one inherits.
