Shekalim 22b — the Talmud in English
Rabbi Yehuda Anturya [ his place] asked before raised the question before] Rabbi Yose: what is different about here, regarding a quarter of silver of a convert, that you say
he said
that if he consecrated them,
they became consecrated.
And
And what is different about
here,
regarding the shekels for the contribution of the chamber, that
regarding shekels for the chamber contribution,
according to Rabbi Shimon,
that they did not become consecrated
even after the fact.
He said to him: There,
regarding shekels,
there is no consecration.
And therefore the consecration does not take effect, for at present sacrifices are not relevant at all.
And if you will say:
let him set aside
the shekels that he consecrated
until the Temple is rebuilt?
It may be said: at present he may not do so, because
perhaps the Temple will be built
not in this year, but only
in
the month of
the first,
which is the month of Nisan.
And
And
the chamber contribution will then be collected
the chamber contribution from the new [funds] at its proper time, on the first of Nisan, and they will again not bring sacrifices from what this one contributed, for it is already called an old contribution, and in the new year they do not offer from the old contribution.
And therefore, even if he consecrated his shekel, the consecration does not take effect.
This is not so
here,
regarding a quarter of silver of a convert: consecration takes effect upon it.
What concern can you have,
for when the Temple is rebuilt, his quarter-dinar is fit for a sacrifice; it is only that Rabban Yohanan ben Zakkai abolished [the practice], so that one should not consecrate in this manner because of the mishap, and the reason of the mishap does not come and remove from it the status of consecration.
They said,
Rav Hamnuna and Rav Adda bar Ahava said in the name of
Rav:
the halakha is according to Rabbi Shimon
of the Mishna: one who consecrates first fruits in the present time, his consecration does not take effect, but one who consecrates shekels, his consecration takes effect.
We shall return to you, chapter “All the Spittle,” and the tractate Shekalim is concluded.
