Original text — Pesachim 106b
-
-
Translation
Rav Bruna said in the name of Rav:
one who washes his hands
on Friday night before the meal, again
should not recite kiddush
himself, but should hear kiddush from another.
For kiddush constitutes an interruption between the washing and the meal, for it is like distraction of the mind, and he will have to wash his hands again. Rather, he should hear kiddush from another person and drink, for this does not constitute distraction of the mind, since he is not reciting the blessing himself. And even if he wishes to wash his hands again, he may not recite kiddush, since the first blessing that he recited over the washing of the hands would be in vain. Therefore, one should conduct oneself initially by reciting kiddush first, and afterward washing his hands.
Rav Yitzhak bar Shmuel bar Marta said to them: It is still
still
that Rav’s soul has not yet departed,
and already
we have forgotten his teachings!
For
many times
times
I would stand before Rav.
Sometimes bread was dear to him,
when he was hungry and bread was dear to him, he would
recite kiddush over bread.
Sometimes wine was dear to him,
when he was thirsty and wine was then dear to him, he would
recite kiddush over wine.
And when he recited kiddush over bread, he had certainly washed his hands before kiddush, and nevertheless kiddush did not constitute an interruption between the washing and eating, and not as Rav Bruna said in the name of Rav, that kiddush constitutes an interruption.
Rav Huna said in the name of Rav: One who tasted,
one who ate on Friday night before kiddush—again
does not recite kiddush
that night, but should wait until the next day and recite kiddush before the meal.
Rav Hana bar Hinena asked Rav Huna: One who tasted
before havdala—
what is the law: may he perform havdala?
Can he still perform havdala that evening, or must he wait until the next day and perform havdala before eating?
He said to him,
Rav Huna:
I say: One who tasted—
performs havdala!
For although concerning kiddush I say, “One who tasted does not recite kiddush,” with havdala there is no need to be so stringent.
And Rav Asi said: One who tasted—
does not perform havdala!
Rav Yirmeya bar Abba happened to come to the house of Rav Asi. He forgot
Rav Yirmeya forgot
and tasted something
before havdala. Nevertheless,
“Give him a cup, and I shall perform havdala.”
Rav Asi gave him a cup and performed havdala over it.
His wife said to him,
the wife of Rav Asi, to Rav Asi:
But master—
does not act this way!
For you hold that one who tastes does not perform havdala?!
He said to her,
Rav Asi:
Leave him,
leave Rav Yirmeya bar Abba, for he
holds like his teacher!
Like Rav, who was his teacher, who holds, “One who tasted performs havdala.” For Rav Huna, who said above, “One who tasted performs havdala,” said it in the name of Rav.
Rav Yosef said in the name of Shmuel: One who tasted—
does not recite kiddush. One who tasted—
does not perform havdala.
And Rabba said that Rav Nahman said in the name of Shmuel: One who tasted—
recites kiddush. And one who tasted—
performs havdala.
