Nazir 33a — the Talmud in English

Abaye said:

there is no need to alter the version; rather, it is speaking of

one who said: “If not so-and-so”,

also

I will be

a

nazirite!

And what is meant by “

his words were not fulfilled”?

His first words were not fulfilled,

his first vow,

but his latter words,

his second vow.

We learned in the Mishna:

“He recoiled backward,”

that person turned back—

he is not a nazirite, etc.

And the Gemara deduces:

the reason is because he recoiled

backward,

therefore he is not a nazirite, because the matter was not clarified.

But if he comes before us,

if that person then came before us and it was clarified who he is,

he is a nazirite!
