Translation
He said to him
Rav Pappa to Rav Shimi bar Ashi:
But according to your reasoning,
that “unspecified birds” designated for sacrifices are included in the category of “unspecified funds,” then the same should apply to unspecified animals designated for a nazirite’s sacrifices [whose specific sacrificial designation has not been stated for each animal]: They should have the status of “unspecified animals.” \-
And if so, the following question arises:
that which we learned
in the Mishna below, on page 30a:
Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel says: If
the nazir
brought three animals
for his nazirite sacrifices,
but did not specify
which was for a sin-offering, which for a burnt-offering, and which for a peace-offering—
it is as though he had specified them, and
the one fit for a sin-offering shall be offered as a sin-offering,
the one fit
for a burnt-offering shall be offered as a burnt-offering,
the one fit
for a peace-offering shall be offered as a peace-offering;
thus, the animal is considered “specified.”
And this presents you with a difficulty:
Why?!
For
you said [
and yet you say:
an animal
that is, animals designated for sacrifices—which are like birds—
is not considered as specified!?
He said to him
Rav Shimi bar Ashi to Rav Pappa: Do you have the right to infer from the animals of naziriteship, which are considered specified, that birds too are considered specified? But:
There,
with regard to the birds of those obligated to bring bird-offerings, since it is written,
“And he shall take
two turtledoves or two young pigeons,” and likewise,
“And he shall perform
them—the koen shall make one a sin-offering and the other a burnt-offering”—
the Merciful One said,
and we have therefore learned that bird-offerings become specified only
either when the owner takes them, or when the koen performs the offering.
Since the owner did not specify them, it is an “unspecified nest,” even with regard to falling to the category of free-will offerings. But
here
(also)
with regard to the animals that he set aside for a sin-offering and a burnt-offering of naziriteship, they are inherently considered specified, as Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel says; and because of this:
