Translation

Abba Shaul says: Even with one man and two women

it is permitted to bury him, since they did not suspect yichud at a time when they are occupied with mourning and burial .

And they do not stand over him

over this infant

in a line,

to receive consolation from those standing in a line on both sides, as was customary with an adult after the burial.

And they do not recite over him the blessing of mourners or the consolation of mourners .

But an infant

thirty

days

goes out

when he is placed

in a deluska

[a small coffin], and he does not go out in one’s arms.

Rabbi Judah says: No:

they do not take him out in a

deluska that is carried by

one person, who carries it on his

shoulder

alone.

Rather,

in a deluska

that is carried by the sides,

by two people, each one holding a different side of the coffin .

And they stand over him in a line.

And they recite over him the blessing of mourners

in the open area, after the burial,

and

they console his relatives with

the consolation of mourners.

One twelve months old—

goes out on a bier.

Rabbi Akiva says:

An infant who is merely twelve months old does not go out on a bier. Only if the infant

is one year old and his limbs

appear large

as

they were when he was

two years old,

or if

he is two years old

and his limbs

appear

as

a one-year-old—

then he

goes out on a bier .

Rabbi Shimon ben Elazar says:

An infant

who goes out on a bier—

many are distressed

feel and grieve

over him .

But an infant who does not go out on a bier—

the many are not distressed over him.

Rabbi Elazar ben Azariah says:

An infant who is

recognizable to the many,

who had already been accustomed to go outside—

the many occupy themselves with him

to accompany him.

He is not recognizable to the many—

the many do not occupy themselves with him .

And what are they,

at what age are minors obligated

in eulogy?

Rabbi Meir said in the name of Rabbi Yishmael: The poor,

who grieve more over the death of their son, since they have no other joy, deliver eulogies for their little ones beginning when they are

three years old.

But

the wealthy,

who have joys besides their children and do not grieve so greatly at their death, deliver eulogies for them when they are

five years old.

Rabbi Judah says in his name,

in the name of Rabbi Yishmael:

The poor—

five years old; the wealthy, six. And the children of the elderly—

like the children of the poor

are they considered.

Rav Giddel bar Menashya said that Rav said: The halakha is in accordance with Rabbi Judah, who said it in the name of Rabbi Yishmael.

Rabbi Anani bar Sasson taught at the entrance of the house of the Nasi:

One whose relative died

one day before Shavuot,

and Shavuot arrived and interrupted the seven-day mourning, this is considered for him, with regard to the counting of thirty, as though he had counted seven days.

And Shavuot

itself counts for him as seven days, since Shavuot is like the Pilgrimage Festivals.

Here there are,

together within two days,

fourteen

for the counting of thirty days!

Rabbi Ami heard and became angry

at Rabbi Anani bar Sasson.

He said,

Rabbi Ami:

Is it so—

is this halakha,

his halakha?

For according to his words,

it is Rabbi Elazar who said it in the name of Rabbi Oshaya!

As follows.

And similarly, it once happened that

Rabbi Yitzhak Nappa taught at the entrance

of the house

of the Exilarch: One day before Shavuot, and Shavuot—

here there are fourteen.

Rav Sheshet heard

and

became angry

at him, and

said: Is it so,

is this halakha,

his halakha?

But

it is Rabbi Elazar who said it in the name of Rabbi Oshaya.

For Rabbi Elazar said in the name of Rabbi Oshaya: From where

does Shavuot have

for its offerings

a period of compensation for all seven days?

As it is stated [Deuteronomy 16], “

On the Festival of Matzot and on the Festival of Weeks.”

And we derive: The Festival of Weeks was compared to the Festival of Sukkot:

Just as the Festival of Matzot has a period of compensation for all seven

so too the Festival of Weeks has a period of compensation for all seven .

He caused

Rav Pappa to rely on Rav Avya the Elder, and

he taught: One day before Rosh Hashana, and Rosh Hashana—

here there are fourteen.

For Rosh Hashana too is like the Pilgrimage Festivals .

Ravina said: Therefore,

if he buried his dead before the Festival, then

one day before the Festival, the Festival, and its eighth day—

here there are twenty-one days .

Ravina happened to come to Sura of the Euphrates.

Rav Haviva of Sura of the Euphrates said to Ravina:

But

did the Master say, “

One day before Rosh Hashana, and Rosh Hashana—

here there are fourteen”?!

He said to him: I

was saying, “It is reasonable according to Rabban Gamliel”

only.

And for Rabban Gamliel, Rosh Hashana is like the Pilgrimage Festivals .

Mishna:

One does not rend, one does not remove the shoe, and one does not provide the recovery meal

eating the recovery meal, with which one restores the mourner,

except the relatives of the deceased .

And they do not provide

the meal of consolation

except

when the comforters sit

on an upright bed.
