:

.
Translation
It was asked of them:
the head of the household went to the cemetery
in order to bury the deceased, and returned —
what?
Is it because he delayed for the needs of burying the deceased that this is considered as though he had been at home, and the count of the days of his younger brothers accrues to him, or not?
Come and hear, for Rabbi Hiyya bar Abba said that Rabbi Yohanan said: Even if the head of the household went to the cemetery
and stayed there, and returned,
he counts together with them.
And we were astonished: If the head of the household went to bury the deceased, does he
count together with them?
And
after all,
was it not taught in a beraita: He counts for himself!?
And we answer:
This is not difficult.
This
that he counts together with them —
when he came within three,
for he returned from the burial within the first three days.
And this
that he counts for himself —
when he did not come,
for he did not return and come
within three
within three days, but afterward.
For this is what Rav said to the sons of Tzelafuni:
those who went to bury the deceased and returned,
those who came within three —
let them count together with you,
let them count seven days with you.
Those who did not come within three —
let them count for themselves,
from the day they returned from the burial.
The mitzva of mourning and the counting of the days of mourning begin with the closing of the grave. When is this said? With regard to the relatives of the deceased who accompany him to the cemetery. But if they bury the deceased in a distant place, and some of the relatives return from the funeral procession to their homes before the burial, their count of the days of mourning begins from the time they returned.
Rava said to the people of Mehoza: You,
you
who do not go after the bier,
for you do not go after the bier to accompany it until the burial, but go with it only a short way —
from the time you turn your faces back
from the time you turn your faces back
from the gate of the city
from inside the city gates,
begin counting,
begin counting the days of mourning, and you need not wait for the estimated time at which they will bury the deceased.
Rabbi Shimon says: Even if one comes
of the mourners
on the seventh day from a nearby place —
he counts
the seven days
together with them.
That is, he practices his mourning only for one day.
Rabbi Hiyya bar Gamda said that Rabbi Yosei ben Shaul said that Rabbi said: And this is when he came
on the seventh day
and
still
found comforters
sitting
with him,
with the mourner who had been at home.
But if the comforters had already risen from being with him, the counting of the seven days ended with that, in the morning, and this person who came now must count seven for himself.
Rav Anan asked:
If
the comforters stirred
themselves
to stand, but did not stand,
still, and the mourner who had not sat arrived —
what?
Is it considered that he arrived after the seven days, or is it still considered within the seven days, since they had not yet risen?
And we conclude:
teyku.
It was learned by tradition: the companion of Rabbi Abba bar Hiyya from Rabbi Abba—and who was he?
Rabbi Zeira; and some say, the companion of Rabbi Zeira from Rabbi Zeira—and who was he?
Rabbi Abba, son of Rabbi Hiyya bar Abba, said in the name of Rabbi Yohanan:
A.
The halakha is according to Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel in
the laws of
animal defects.
B.
And the halakha is according to Rabbi Shimon in mourning.
And we explain: The halakha
according to Rabbi Shimon in mourning —
that which we said,
that even if the mourner arrived on the seventh day, he counts together with them.
And the halakha
according to Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel in animal defects —
For we learned in a Mishna: If the intestines were perforated, and mucus seals them —
it is fit,
even though an ordinary perforation in the intestines renders an animal unfit,
the words of Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel.
What is mucus?
What mucus is it that seals, whose sealing renders the animal fit?
Rav Kahana said: The intestinal secretion,
the moisture of the intestines,
that emerges through pressure,
which comes out while the intestines are being pressed.
A certain person said,
one man, who heard that they said in the name of Rabbi Zeira or in the name of Rabbi Abba, son of Rabbi Hiyya bar Abba, who lived in the Land of Israel, that the halakha is according to Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel in animal defects and the halakha is according to Rabbi Shimon in mourning:
May I merit,
may I merit
and go up,
and ascend to the Land of Israel,
and learn this teaching
and learn this teaching
from the mouth of its master,
from the mouth of the very author of the teaching, Rabbi Zeira or Rabbi Abba, son of Rabbi Hiyya bar Abba.
When he went up,
when he went up to the Land of Israel,
he found him,
he found
Rabbi Abba, son of Rabbi Hiyya bar Abba.
He said to him,
the man who had ascended from Babylonia asked him: Is it indeed that
the Master said
that
the halakha is according to Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel in animal defects?
He said to him: I — “
There is no halakha
according to Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel”
did I say!
And he further asked him: Regarding this which they say in your name, that the halakha is
according to Rabbi Shimon in mourning —
what,
is this indeed the halakha?
He said to him: It is a dispute!
For it was stated: Rav Hisda said: The halakha is
according to Rabbi Shimon in mourning,
and likewise Rabbi Yohanan said: The halakha is
according to Rabbi Shimon in mourning.
Whereas
Rav Nahman said: There is no halakha
according to Rabbi Shimon in mourning.
And
the conclusion of the matter:
A.
There is no halakha according to Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel in animal defects.
B.
And the halakha is according to Rabbi Shimon in mourning.
Since
Shmuel said
that
the halakha follows the lenient opinion in mourning.
The Gemara now brings the law that we learned in a beraita in tractate Semahot [chapter 9]:
For all the dead alike,
if
he hastens the bier,
he hastens to take the bier of the deceased out for burial —
this is praiseworthy,
since one must bring him forward and bury him, for if he leaves him overnight he violates “Do not leave him overnight.”
But
for his father and for his mother,
if he hastens to bury them and does not wait until a large crowd gathers in their honor at the time of the funeral procession and burial —
this is disgraceful. .
But if
it was the eve of Shabbat or the eve of a Festival
and he hastened to bury them —
this is praiseworthy, for
then
he does not do
the hastening to bury them
except for the honor of his father and mother.
For all the dead alike, if he wishes, he reduces his involvement
in commerce;
if he wishes, he does not
reduce it.
