Translation

Rav Pappa said: Everyone agrees

that they hold that we derive

“derive from it and from it.” And this is the reason of Rabbi: just as there. What is there,

in the peace-offerings of an individual, they wave

something that

is

a gift to the priest,

the breast and the thigh,

so here too

they wave

something that is a gift to the priest,

and here, the peace-offerings of the assembly are all given to the priest, and therefore they wave them in their entirety.

Ravina said: Everyone agrees that we derive from it and leave it in its place,

and therefore Rabbi holds that they wave them whole.

And this is the reason of the Rabbis

that they wave only the breast and the thigh, because it is written concerning the peace-offerings of an individual, “their peace-offerings,” in the plural,

it is an amplification,

to teach that also with the peace-offerings of the public they wave their breast and thigh, but not all of them.

We learned in the Mishna:

Rabbi Shimon says: Three types require three mitzvot, two in each one, and the third has none. And so forth.

And we raised an objection concerning it:

Let the sacrifices of the peace-offerings of an individual require waving while alive by means of a kal va-chomer: Just as the sacrifices of the peace-offerings of the public, which do not require laying on of hands while alive, require waving while alive, the sacrifices of the peace-offerings of an individual, which require laying on of hands while alive, is it not logical that they should require waving while alive?!

And we answer:

The Torah excluded, concerning the sacrifices of the peace-offerings of the public, “them”—them

they wave,

to exclude the sacrifices of the peace-offerings of an individual

from waving!

And furthermore we raised an objection concerning it:

Let the sacrifices of the peace-offerings of the public require laying on of hands by means of a kal va-chomer: Just as the sacrifices of the peace-offerings of an individual, which do not require waving while alive, require laying on of hands, the sacrifices of the peace-offerings of the public, which require waving while alive, is it not logical that they should require laying on of hands?

Ravina said: It is a tradition

from Sinai that there are only

two instances of laying on of hands performed by the public

and no more: one in the bull for an erroneous ruling, and the second in the scapegoat, as is explained explicitly; and therefore there is no laying on of hands with the peace-offerings of the public.

And furthermore we raised an objection concerning it:

And let the guilt-offering of a leper require

waving

when it is

slaughtered, by means of a kal va-chomer: Just as the sacrifices of the peace-offerings of an individual, which do not require waving while alive, require waving when slaughtered, the guilt-offering of a leper, which requires waving while alive, is it not logical that it should require waving when slaughtered?!

And we answer:

The Torah excluded, concerning the sacrifices of the peace-offerings of an individual, “it,”

for it is

“it,” to exclude the guilt-offering of a leper

from waving after slaughter.

The Sages taught: Five who brought one offering —

one waves on behalf of all of them [

in place of all of them].

And a woman —

a priest waves on her behalf.

And likewise one who sends his offerings from overseas —

a priest waves on his behalf.
