:
Translation
Since
“upon the wood” is written
it must be placed ממש upon the wood.
For if you should ask according to the one who says that “upon” means
adjacent,
it is understood:
what—
whether
here too
it should be said: “upon
the
wood,”
adjacent
to the wood;
or perhaps “upon the wood” is analogous to “upon the altar”—
just as there “upon
the altar”
means ממש,
for it is not possible to burn [the offering] other than upon the altar,
so here too “upon
the wood”
means ממש?!
And we conclude:
teiku!
Mishna:
The kometz—
its lesser part invalidates its greater part,
if anything at all is missing from it, it is invalid.
The tenth
of fine flour of the meal-offering—
its lesser part invalidates its greater part.
The wine
that they bring with the offering in order to pour it upon the altar—
its lesser part invalidates its greater part.
The oil
of the meal-offering—
its lesser part invalidates its greater part,
for if anything is missing from the measure of wine and oil required for that meal-offering, they are invalid.
The fine flour and the oil
in the meal-offering—
invalidate one another,
for if one of them is missing, it is invalid.
The kometz and the frankincense—
invalidate one another,
for if one of them was burned without the other, the meal-offering is invalid 162 .
Gemara:
And we raise a question concerning it:
What is the reason
that the lesser part of the kometz invalidates its greater part?
And we answer:
The verse says “the fullness of his handful” twice—
the verse repeated it concerning it to invalidate, so that nothing should be missing from it.
And we raise a question concerning it:
The tenth
of fine flour mentioned in the Mishna,
its lesser part invalidates its greater part—
what is the reason?
And we answer:
The verse says “from its fine flour,”
and they expound the superfluous letter heh,
that if anything at all is missing, it is invalid.
The lesser part of the wine invalidates its greater part
is learned from the fact that it is written concerning the libations
“so,”
which implies that it is an invalidating requirement.
The oil—
its lesser part invalidates its greater part!
There are two meal-offerings that contain oil, and in both of them it is learned that the oil invalidates: the oil
of the meal-offering of libations
is learned to invalidate from the fact that the Torah wrote
“so,”
and the oil
of a voluntary meal-offering
is learned to invalidate from the fact that
the verse says “and from its oil,”
through the superfluous heh, to say:
that if anything at all is missing, it is invalid.
The oil and the fine flour invalidate one another,
and this is learned from the fact that it is written
“from its fine flour and from its oil,”
which implies that both of them must be in the meal-offering; and the Torah again wrote
“from its flour,”
that is, fine flour,
“and from its oil,”
to teach that both of them invalidate. [For this is the rule: every matter concerning which the verse repeated itself is only to invalidate].
The kometz and the frankincense invalidate one another
is learned from the fact that it is written: “And he shall take a handful, the fullness of his handful ...
upon all its frankincense,”
which implies that both of them must be in the burning; and the Torah again wrote: “And he shall raise from it with his handful ...
and all the frankincense that is upon the meal-offering,”
to teach that each of them invalidates the other [as was explained concerning the oil and fine flour].
Mishna:
The two goats of the Day of Atonement,
upon which lots are placed, one “for the Lord” and one “for Azazel,”
invalidate one another,
for it is impossible to bring one without the other.
The two sheep of Shavuot invalidate one another.
The two loaves
that come with the sheep of Shavuot
invalidate one another.
The two arrangements
of the showbread, arranged upon the table in two arrangements, six loaves in each one,
invalidate one another.
The two bowls
—spoons in which frankincense is placed, set upon the two arrangements of the showbread—
invalidate one another.
The arrangements and the bowls invalidate one another,
for if one of them is missing, he may not place the other alone upon the table.
The two kinds
of bread
that are in
the offerings of the
Nazirite
that he brings at the completion of his naziriteship,
, three
kinds
that are in the red cow,
cedar wood, hyssop, and crimson wool, which they cast into the burning of the cow,
and four
kinds of breads
that are in the thanksgiving-offering, and four
kinds
that are in the lulav, and four
kinds
that are in the leper,
birds, cedar wood, hyssop, and crimson wool—all these
invalidate one another.
The seven sprinklings that are in the red cow,
with whose blood he sprinkles opposite the front of the Tent of Meeting,
invalidate one another.
The seven sprinklings upon between the staves
on the Day of Atonement , the seven
upon the curtain,
the seven
upon the golden altar
[of those offerings from which he sprinkles upon the curtain and upon the golden altar]
invalidate one another,
for if one sprinkling of them is missing, he has not effected atonement.
