Original text — Chullin 21b
Translation
Just as an animal sin-offering does not come
except from
unconsecrated money,
and
it is impossible to purchase it with second-tithe money,
and
it may be offered only
during the day
and not at night,
and
its service may be performed only
with his right hand
of the kohen, for all these laws are learned from Scripture, that they apply to an animal sin-offering.
So too, a bird burnt-offering —
does not come except from unconsecrated money, and during the day, and with his right hand.
But,
perhaps you will say: if we learn from an animal sin-offering, we should also learn with regard to an additional matter:
Just as there
its slaughter is
with most of the two
signs, and it is not necessary to slaughter all the signs,
so here
in the bird burnt-offering, its pinching should be
with most of the two
only?
The verse states
with regard to a bird burnt-offering brought voluntarily: “
And he shall pinch
its head,
and he shall burn
it upon the altar.” Scripture juxtaposed pinching with burning, to say:
Just as with burning
they burn
the head by itself and
the
body by itself,
so
pinching should be performed in this manner, so that
the head is by itself and the body is by itself.
That is, he must cut through both signs completely and not only most of them.
Rabbi Ishmael says: “According to the law”
stated with regard to the bird burnt-offering means
according to the law of the bird sin-offering
written in the section immediately before the law of the bird burnt-offering. And it is reasonable that the phrase “according to the law” was stated with regard to it.
Just as with a bird sin-offering
its pinching is
opposite
the
nape, so too a bird burnt-offering is opposite the nape,
for the Torah stated “opposite the nape” only with regard to a bird sin-offering, and from it we learn with regard to a bird burnt-offering.
But,
perhaps you will say: if we learn from a bird sin-offering, we should also learn with regard to an additional matter:
Just as there he pinches
only one sign,
and does not separate
the head from the body, but leaves them connected
by one sign,
that is, through the second sign, which is not pinched, for with regard to a bird sin-offering it is stated: “and he shall not separate it,”
so here,
with regard to a bird burnt-offering,
does he pinch and not separate it by one sign?
The verse states
with regard to a bird burnt-offering: “
And they shall offer it,”
which indicates that its pinching differs from that of a bird sin-offering.
Rabbi Elazar son of Rabbi Shimon says: “According to the law”
means
according to the law of the bird sin-offering.
