Translation
Washing of hands
for teruma —
it is necessary
up to the joint
the third, which is the end of the fingers.
The sanctification of hands and feet
from the basin, which is required
in the Temple —
up to the joint
the upper one, which is the place where the palm of the hand joins the arm.
And anything that forms an interposition in immersion on the body
that is considered an interposition and invalidates the immersion of a person’s body,
forms an interposition
also
in washing of hands for non-sacred food, and in the sanctification of hands and feet in the Temple.
For if any sort of interposition is found upon them, the washing of the hands is invalidated, and the sanctification of the hands and feet is invalidated.
Rav said: Up to here
up to the second joint, this is washing
for non-sacred food.
And
up to here
up to the third joint, this is washing
for teruma,
and Rav held like the beraita, and he was indicating with his hand upon himself how far the washing needed to extend.
And Shmuel said: Up to here,
up to the end of the third joint,
both for non-sacred food and for teruma, stringently,
for there is no distinction between teruma and non-sacred food, and in both one follows the stringent position.
And Rav Sheshet said: Up to here
up to the end of the second joint -
both for non-sacred food and for teruma, leniently.
For in both it is sufficient to wash up to the end of the second joint.
Bar Hedya said: I was standing
I was standing
before Rav Ami, and he said: Up to here,
up to the end of the third joint,
both for non-sacred food and for teruma, stringently.
For in both it is necessary to reach the end of the third joint.
And do not say, Rabbi Ami
who acted in this manner
because he was a priest
and was accustomed to teruma, and therefore he accustomed himself to be stringent even with non-sacred food, up to the third joint, so that he would also be accustomed to this with teruma.
For Rabbi Meisha, the son of the son of Rabbi Joshua ben Levi, was a Levite
for he was a Levite, and he was not accustomed to eating teruma.
And he said —
up to here
up to the third joint
both for non-sacred food and for teruma, stringently.
And we see that this was his position as a matter of basic law, and not because of the practice of teruma.
Rav said: A person washes his two hands in the morning, and stipulates concerning them
that the washing should be effective for
the entire day,
provided that he is careful not to soil them and not to render them impure. And he may eat the entire day without washing, relying on the first washing that he performed.
